The annual International Dragon Boat Festival held in Philadelphia on the first Saturday in June, is different then past festivals. It now has a new category called the Vargas Cup, named in honor of our beloved coach Detective Pedro Vargas, who passed away in December 2013.  Only law enforcement, fire and rescue teams could compete in this category.  In honor of this new challenge our friends from the North, the Blue Dragons (Ottawa Police Dragon Boat Club), traveled to Philadelphia to compete. All of those practices on the cold Schuylkill River paid off.  We blew the competition out of the water. It was a fast and fun race!  Since that date a new rival for the Cup as emerged. The NYPD team.  They formed in 2011 and are getting better every year, but not there yet.  We faced at the 2015 World Games in VA then again at the 2017 World Games in LA. I'm sure we will see them again in 2019 in China.

We are not all work and no play. Win, lose or draw, we always have fun. 

COMMUNITY BUILDING

The Philadelphia Police Boat Team strongly believes in supporting their community.  Aside from their law enforcement and fire fighter duties, and managing their own team, several members of the Philadelphia Police Boat Team make time to help train and coach other Dragon Boat festival teams that compete in the annual Philadelphia Independence and the Philadelphia International Dragon Boat Festivals.

Teams they helped train and coach include The Sugar House Casino's Sugar Dragons and the United States Marine and Navy Dragon Boat Festival Teams.
